Empowering Menstruation Education for Resilient schoolGirls Everyday
AMEF is excited to announce the commencement of the EMERGE Project funded by UNWomen and Ebase Cameroon. This initiative seeks to improve the school attendance of adolescent girls of menstruating age through Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) in 10 secondary schools located in Fako and Meme Divisions of the South West Region of Cameroon. The interventions include the rehabilitation of gender-sensitive spaces adapted for MHM, and the promotion of positive attitudes towards menstruation via club activities and advocacy.
After a thorough assessment of the existing safe spaces and sanitary conditions, the project team engaged in an extensive training session with a gender expert from UNWomen in the person of Zambo Bouchard on Nov 16th, 2023. His session focused on the overall project objectives, the relationship between MH and the SDGs, situational analysis of MHM in Cameroon as well as the mandate of the UNWomen. This very educative session provided more insight to the project team with regard to the project implementation and its ultimate success.
Despite the growing attention towards MHM, more action still needs to be enforced to ensure that girls and women are able to achieve their full potential and are not held back by their periods. By addressing these challenges, we hope to empower girls and women and accelerate the overall development of families and communities by making menstruation a normal fact of life.
