1. Position Summary
The WASH / Shelter Assistant supports the WASH / Shelter Officer in the day-to-day field implementation, supervision, documentation, and follow-up of all WASH and Shelter activities at community level.
The Assistant ensures quality field presence during infrastructure works, distributions, hygiene promotion, and community trainings, while maintaining accurate records and supporting evidence collection for monitoring and reporting.
2. Key Duties and Responsibilities
2.1 Support to WASH and Shelter Infrastructure Works
The Assistant shall:
• Be present at construction/rehabilitation sites of:
o Water points, boreholes, springs, storage units
o Household and institutional latrines
o Handwashing stations
o Emergency and transitional shelters
• Monitor daily progress of artisans and contractors.
• Report technical or quality issues to the WASH/Shelter Officer.
• Ensure materials are used appropriately on site.
2.2 Support to NFI, Shelter Kit, Hygiene Kit and Water Kit Distributions
The Assistant shall:
• Support beneficiary verification during distributions.
• Ensure proper arrangement of distribution sites.
• Guide beneficiaries on correct use of items received.
• Ensure attendance sheets and acknowledgement forms are correctly signed.
2.3 Community Mobilization and Training Support
The Assistant shall:
• Mobilize community members for WASH, hygiene, and shelter awareness sessions.
• Support training of WASH committees, sanitation groups, and shelter beneficiaries.
• Assist during hygiene promotion campaigns and shelter awareness sessions.
2.4 Monitoring Use of Facilities and Items
The Assistant shall:
• Conduct household follow-up visits after distributions.
• Observe and report whether:
o Latrines and water points are being used
o Shelters are occupied by intended beneficiaries
o Water storage containers are clean and covered
o Handwashing stations are in use
• Provide field observations for Post Distribution Monitoring (PDM).
2.5 Documentation and Evidence Collection
The Assistant shall:
• Take clear photos of activities, infrastructure, and distributions.
• Keep copies of beneficiary lists, attendance sheets, and activity records.
• Provide daily field updates to the WASH/Shelter Officer.
• Record GPS locations of facilities where required.
2.6 Support to Governance Structures
The Assistant shall:
• Follow up with WASH committees and shelter beneficiaries on maintenance of facilities.
• Report issues related to misuse or poor maintenance of infrastructure.
2.7 Conflict Sensitivity, Gender and Safety
The Assistant shall:
• Ensure women, girls, and vulnerable persons have safe access to facilities.
• Promote respectful, inclusive behaviour during activities.
• Report protection or safeguarding concerns observed in the field.
3. Required Qualifications and Experience
• Diploma or Certificate in Construction, Environmental Health, Community
Development, or related field.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in field implementation of WASH or shelter activities.
• Experience working with communities in rural or conflict-affected settings.
• Ability to read, write, and complete field forms accurately.

• Quality supervision presence at worksites and distributions
• Accuracy of field records and documentation
• Timely reporting of field issues
• Evidence of proper use of facilities and distributed items
• Community feedback and engagement
6. Code of Conduct and Accountability
Bound by AMEF Code of Conduct, Safeguarding Policy, Conflict Sensitivity and Gender Policy,
and instructions from the WASH/Shelter Officer.
